August 19, 2005 The Ex-Student Weekend--August 5 and 6--was quite a success and the Block Party on Friday evening even more so. The east side of the square and the block south of that which is in front of the Ritz were blocked off and people milled around all evening. Lights were on in all the buildings around the square, vendors were selling home made ice cream, hamburgers, etc., and the kiddie cars were constantly on the go--round and round! Antique cars and motorcycles were parked in front of the museum. People were in and out all evening. A front window at the museum had a one-day exhibit on Friday, August 5, of a 1957 Schwin Black Phantom and a 1951 Murray Sad Face pedal car. They had been perfectly restored by the owner and created a lot of interest. Dr. Tommy Bryant's photographs are beautiful and some of them remind us of yesterdays long gone. This exhibit will be here until after the first of September. A number of volunteers worked in the museum throughout August. It was a busy place. Work begun on obituary scrapbooks, the military case was cleaned and rearranged, and a exhibit, "A Hundred Years of Basic Black" features ladies black clothing. The oil can exhibit will be removed in early September. The Peanut Festival and Pageant will be Saturday, August 5, 2005. May 16, 2005 -- The most significant news from the museum is the death of President Willie Faye Patrick in early April. A new president will be elected at the annual meeting in November. New docent for the museum is June Blair. June is a quilter and has already contributed significantly to the care of quilts in our collection. The Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce office is now located in the museum. The telephone number for the Chamber is 806 447-5848 and the mail address is P.O. Box 267. ***** After a very successful showing here in Wellington, the exhibit Out of the Nest: Artists' Birdhouses was returned to Kansas City on April 20, 2005. ***** The exhibit Out of the Nest: Artists' Birdhouses has arrived. It will be on exhibit through April 14, 2005. This exhibit looks at three distinct types of birdhouses: the purely functional birdhouse, the hobbyist's birdhouse, and the artist's birdhouse. Several birdhouses made during a workshop conducted by Bobbie Rhodes here at the Museum are displayed as well as birdhouses made as a hobby by local resident Derwin Comer. Comer uses children's books in a unique way for birdhouses than can actually house the birds in your backyard, or they can be for decorative purposes inside the home. Edna Wooldridge, a local artist, has shared some birdhouses she had painted. Our of the Nest will surprise and amaze you with its vast range of creativity. Enjoy these functional and fanciful birdhouses inspired by some of nature's most engaging creatures: birds. This exhibit is a Texas HELP exhibition toured by ExhibitsUSA. HELP, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance in partnership with the Texas Association of Museums, is made possible through the combined vision and generosity of The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston; The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation; Houston Endowment, Inc.; the Texas Commission on the Arts; and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership, and a lifetime of learning. Out of the Nest: Artists' Birdhouses was organized by ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance.
